It's definitely not for everyone, especially those that hate grindy games. I am actually really enjoying the game, although I will admit it is not without its faults and I completely understand the mixed reviews.
Bungie has always excelled in world and universe creation. This is always evident in its level design, both aesthetically and mechanically. I love exploring the maps and the stories they tell without cutscenes. However, it can get very old very quick re-treading the same paths over and over again when playing new story missions. The missions on each world start out by "go to this location" and the next mission will have you go back through the area you just went through to get to a new area to complete the current mission. The mission after that has you retread the areas of the two previous missions to get to a new area and so on and so forth. I don't understand why our space ships can't drop us at the beginning of a new location rather than just the same starting point every time.
As I explore the beautiful maps, I SOMETIMES come across loot and collectibles. They are so few and far between that I actually get excited when I find them, which is something that I can't say for games like Borderlands where you are almost bombarded with loot. I know some might enjoy that style of "looting" and loathe how Destiny handles its looting system, but the over-abundance of loot in a game is just not for me.
My other big complaint about Destiny is its lack of an in-game codex, you know, those things we take for granted in other games apparently. Because of Destiny's threadbare story and story delivery, the information provided in the "grimoire" is essential to understanding not only parts of the games story and universe but also certain mechanics in the game. However, the only way to access it is through Bungie.net or the Destiny app, which feels like a cheap way to drive traffic to the site and to download the map.
That is all...for now. Raids are available today so we shall see how those pan out.
