I disagree actually. Star Wars can easily support the likes of Jar Jar Binks. That particular Pandora's Box was opened long ago, in a galaxy far far away on a planet named Endor when a legion--which, if we're using the Roman definition means 5,400 (EU has it at 8,192)--of the Emperor's finest Stormtroopers were defeated by slingshots, stone spears and a Wookie. (We could tell they were the finest because one of their many shots hit Leia and R2-D2.) If we take the now gone EU into consideration, this is likely the same unit that helped Vader in the Great Jedi Purge.
The problem isn't that he didn't belong, the problem was extremely poor judgment in a showing a side of the SW universe that shouldn't have reared its ugly head again after RotJ, and then constantly rubbing him in the face of the audience. Likewise the problem with RR isn't IF he fits, because he does fit in this kind of wacky story, but HOW he'll fit. Done well--and considering its Bradley Cooper--it could work well. Done well, he could be Marvel's R2-D2. Done badly and you have a silly talking raccoon sharing the same universe as RDJ's Iron Man, leaving him to become Marvel's Jar Jar.
I'm severely hoping he's R2-D2, not Jar Jar.
Ewoks of course is the first time Lucas openly decided on something for marketing reasons, Ewoks would make him more money than the original idea of Wookies.
The problem that makes Jar Jar even worst than Ewoks is that Ewoks are doing their best with what they got, they seem silly to us, but they aren't acting silly/stupid.
The huge majority of Gungans are putting up a good fight, as good as they can give, Jar Jar and the Boss Nass character however are just slapstick comedy.
Still remains to be seen how much the Guardians will interact with the Avengers, the door is open for it still, but there's no reason to worry about that now.
