Russians will spend $1,143 BN on videogames by the end of 2014 - which is 13,2% more than last year, says analytical company Newzoo.
USA is the world's largest videogame market. The corresponding 2014 number for USA is $20.5 BN. Second place is China's, despite having 4.3 times the population. Russia may have the world's ninth largest population, and sixth largest number of Internet users, but in terms of videogame players, it's only number twelve.
Newzoo underestimates the Russian market by 50%, says CEO and founder of game developer Nival, Sergey Orlovskiy. He puts Russia on the world's eight place, after France ($2,7 BN), but above Canada ($1,6 BN). According to Orlovskiy's data online games alone generate $1 BN revenue.
The country's rating is determined not by population, but by disposable income, says owner of the Red Buzz gaming site, Sergey Galyonkin. According to him, people usually spend "free" money on videogames, and Russia is slow to grow in this respect. Japan, for instance, with its lower inclination towards foreign travel and buying expensive cars, has a higher share of entertainment in family budgets than other countries.
Mobile game share in videogame expenses is currently 25-30%, by estimation of director of the publishing department of mobile game developer KamaGames, Evgeniy Kochubeyev. According to Newzoo, mobile games will take up 27% of the world's videogame market in 2014, and by 2015 will outstrip the console game market.

In truth, I'm not honestly surprised the data is
A. Conflicting
B. Shows that Russians don't buy a lot of video games
Though I imagine the culture of piracy has died down somewhat since people started charging reasonablish prices for games, I imagine it's still there and this effects (or is it affects?) how much games make in the country.
