I'm sure someone could argue that a "dark and gritty" fantasy like this isn't going to feature supermodels, but The Witcher 2 (a game I didn't even like) is even darker and grittier, and none of the characters' appearances rubbed me the wrong way like they do in this game. Varric looks so different that I might not have noticed it was him had it not been pointed out.
On another note, ff.net has 15 stories written for Inquisition. No pairings, really, which is rather surprising given the fanaticism BioWare fans usually display towards that sort of thing. It almost makes me want to write a complete novelisation of the game, then after DA:I is released, play through it to see how close my depictions of the party members were to those in the game. BioWare's character archetypes are so familiar at this point that I don't think it would too difficult to write a close approximation of their personalities with the limited information present.
DA 2 already had the problem that the prettiest female character was your sister... With a face that was randomly generated...
That pretty much tells the whole story, the only way they can do beautiful is when they map the face of a supermodel/actress, when they come up with something themselves... yuck.
