There are some things that the Witcher games do wrong. For instance, the combat system is clumsy on both games, TW2 has the worst designed minigames i have seen in a game. It is not a group RPG and that bothers me a little.
But i very much like Geralt. He is a very well written mutant fantasy character, its inner struggles are portrayed well. I can sympathize with him. Although it is a fantasy setting, the problems the characters of the Witcher games have to deal, feel real world problems and in the same time they do not appear stereotypical. Story and dialogues have been done with love and care and this shows. I believe that since the makers do not originate from the "western world" but they have felt oppression some time in their history -Sapkowsky, the author of the Witcher books surely have grown under the communist status kuo- they tend to have a different more cynical and mature view of the world and that affects their work. While i have enjoyed many story driven games made from western developers, i believe that CDPR dared to give me something different but equally interesting and good.
As for choice and consequence, the bread and butter of a good story driven game, the Witcher games deliver from the first or even the second try (as in the case of game changing free DLC for Witcher 2). I can feel that my choices matter and some are painful ones and that adds to the replayability alot. For TW2 you get a whole different second act depending your allegiance at the start, and that will affect the ending. Oh yes, there are real endings here without the use of colour palette.
And as people have noted, CDPR is doing a great job being nice and pro-consumer and i feel that i am a truly valued customer. But first and foremost, they made two great games i very much liked.
