Jason Stathan is another example. But to his credit he's flat out admitted that he's wanted to be in dramatic rolls but people only hire him for action movies. In his case its the industry shoe horning him into being a one trick pony.
Will smith WAS one until he broke out of his action movie rolls too and started doing drama.
So to me just because Sam Jackson isn't playing "The Loud Black guy that screams Mother Fucker every other sentence" and is instead playing a more serious roll, doesn't bother me at all. In fact it was a delightful change of pace.
So looking at his acting in the role itself, as in a serious, wise, no nonsense Warrior Space Monk I have to say he nailed it perfectly. He was soft spoken, questioning everything and every one. He called the heads up on everyone there. Anakin, Palpatine and even warning the Jedi about Dooku and such. So yeah he was like the strong right hand of Yoda and Sam Jackson played his role to a T so I tip my hat off to him stepping out of the "comfort zone" and embracing a new role and not just being "The screaming black guy in a bath robe"
