It probably would have made Anakin's fall more believable, and certainly would have made the points regarding not training him feel less hollow when it comes to the issue of his anger.
In short, I feel there's at least two to five minutes of context cut from the film that would have made the whole Resistance, New Republic, First Order deal much cleaer.
It was some other planet, not Coruscant. Given that the First Order has access to the Empire's archives and the Republic/Resistance does not the First Order could very well be in control of Coruscant while the Republic set up shop elsewhere and got blown up by the superweapon. As for why there's a resistance, after mulling it over I feel that they were a proxy group "unofficially" being supported by the Republic to attack the First Order without actually going to war. Clearly they did a poor job masking their relationship, given that the Order blows up the Republic capitol for the meddling.
I've heard that said before when I've brought it up, and I can buy it not being Coruscant but my gut reaction in watching the film was City Planet = Coruscant. Coupled with the fact that they were targeting the new Republic, it's a fair assumption to make. Based off what Noelemahc said regarding the scenes cut, it would have been helpful to have kept the five minute conversation with the Senator we view the planet getting Kerbstomped by the laser just to flesh out that no this isn't Coruscant, and yes, there is a need for there to be a Resistance because we (The Republic) sure as shit can't deal with the First Order.
