I feel like this would be unlikely to be the case. The fact that the empire split up when it's head boss and his dragon got killed, leading to the local forces in the area gaining power feels more realistic to me based off what we've seen when you remove a strong leader from a country held together only by fear and the threat of ultimate force. This obviously makes for a poor choice in terms of a Hero and underdog situation however.
True, but part of this goes back to the lack of world building present in the film. How badly did Palpatine's death shake up the Empire? Did it immediately fracture? Did it try to hold itself together and slowly, over the course of time fall apart? Did a certain blue strategic genius or some other leader with charisma (Snoke?) appear from out of nowhere to try and consolidate power? Did the Empire conduct a scorched earth campaign on rebelling planets and just bombard them all from orbit with Star Destroyers after Endor? Is the First Order one of many orders trying to reclaim the glory of the Empire? Has Supreme Leader Snoke effectively saved the Empire with his Dark Side powers? Is it effectively the Empire in everything but name in terms of size and power? Why is the Republic seemingly only five planets if they won the galactic civil war? The freaking Ultramarines alone control 13 planets. Nobody knows as of yet.
