Hey man, there's no need to start throwing around the U word now is there. If we're not careful, we'll end up with Ultrasmurfs trying to conquer a new galaxy in the name of the Emperor and the Spiritual Liege.
Additionally, I just checked Wookiepedia but apparently it's a case of RTFM here. After the battle of endor the empire would go on to survive and fight against the Rebel Alliance and it's successor in the form of the New Republic. The empire would not fall apart but suffer massive internal infighting which would lead to them squandering their numbers advantage due to a lack of military strategy and internal politics. The empire would then effectively collapse with the Concordant being signed, seeing most of it's remaining forces retreating to uninhabited areas before reforming under the First Order as the first (and from the looks of it, the only) successor state to the Empire.
The the reason Couroscant isn't the capitol, the lack of military force and the general lack of preparation for a war with a nation that was clearly gunning for them is put down to a combination of corruption, peace blindness and lack of foresight. Actually, from reading it, they basically just copy pasted Nazi Germany into Star Wars and put them up a notch or three in terms of the crazy belief from their people and armies. The more I read, the more the New Republic comes across as less the good guys out gunned and underpowered and more incompetent, unfocused and just generally bad at ruling.
TL;DR Don't read the back story, it kinda sucks and just further goes to make the New Republic look incompetent.
