Plugged In
Generally, when the video game world meets the real world, the results are either corny or fanboy-focused. But Square Enix's latest venture is a different story altogether.
The Final Fantasy XIV-themed Eorzea Cafe, which opens tomorrow, is shaping up to be a high-class establishment that blends haute cuisine with an environment evoking the spirit of the game. A yellow light, meant to simulate the sunset in the city-state of Gridania, permeates the cafe.
Loaded with weapons and armor that are used in the game - along with a collection of Moogles (adorable winged creatures who appear throughout the series) scattered about the place - the cafe even includes PCs, letting patrons play the game as they await their food.
And the food? It's an extensive selection - there's a menu of 33 appetizers and entres, and 28 different drinks - with everything themed around the game. Those drinks will be served on collectable coasters that have pictures of the Primals, magical beings that can be summoned in the games.
The cafe itself is modeled after the Carline Canopy, a gathering spot in the game that can be found in the New Gridania zone of the Black Shroud region.
Can't make it to Tokyo to see the place for yourself? Here are a few highlights of the restaurant, courtesy of Famitsu and RadioKaiKan:
A map of the Final Fantasy world ties the restaurants other thematic elements together.
We're not sure exactly where this sword originated in the game, but it's impressive nonetheless - and a good reminded to tip your waitstaff.
Some of the thematic coasters for fans. One per drink!
A shortbow, one of the most familiar weapons in Final Fantasy XIV. People who have visited the restaurant for previews note that, despite the name, it's quite large.
Moogles, which have appeared in every main Final Fantasy game since Final Fantasy III, are all over the cafe - usually having lots of fun. You can even order a Moogle-shaped dessert.
